400m Swim / 9km Off-Road Cycle / 3km Run

This is an ideal event for beginners new to the sport of triathlon who want to get involved in their first open water novice event. Our carefully planned routes meet competition standards set by Triathlon Scotland - distances vary due to the off-road courses. With well equipped safety boats patrolling the swim, signage and marshals keeping a close eye out all along the cycle and run routes, and St Andrew’s ambulance on site, these events give you the incredible location and technical support to challenge yourself to a new level.

The Wee Beastie Novice Triathlon starts with a shallow 400m open-water swim in Loch Lomond, following the shoreline on a route clearly marked by buoys. After collecting your bike in transition you will set out on a 9km off-road cycle, composed of 2 laps. Finally you drop your bike back in transition for a beautiful 3km run to finish.

Please note: The Bike route is a MOUNTAIN BIKE course which can get very muddy, and is NOT suitable for Road Bikes or bikes with Slick tyres. See our FAQs for more details.

On the Day

Event Centre

Registration will be at the Event Centre on the field above the slipway in Balloch Castle Country Park. It will open at 0800 for all events, and will close at 0945 for Wee Beastie competitors.

Registration & Race Packs

**We do not send race packs out by post**

Your race packs are ready to pick up on the morning of the event from Registration - this will have your race number, bike/helmet stickers and timing chips in. There will be a tub of safety pins at registration if you need them to attach your race number to your Tri-belt or T-Shirt.

Transition will be open from 0800 until 0945. It will then remain closed until every competitor has left for the bike laps (expected to be 1145). Only competitors will be allowed in transition. Boxes and bags are not permitted in transition.

Race Briefings

The Race briefing for the Wee Beastie will be given at 1000 on the waterfront by the Race Director and Tri Scotland Official.

Race Routes

Courses have changed from previous year to remove the crossover between bikes and swimmers exiting the water. This has meant we have taken you off the tarmac a bit more, but we have also removed the steep hill at the North of the park. The maps will be available on race day near Registration, but don't worry, there will be plenty of marshals and signage to keep you right!

Bag Drop

There will be a staffed baggage tent available next to Registration.

St Mocha will be at the event selling hot drinks, soup and ice cream. We will also have water available for all participants and free fruit for post event energy.

The prizegiving will take place after our last competitor crosses the finish line. We have prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd men and women across the finish line. All finishers will receive a goodybag and medal - handmade locally.

We will have one male and one female tent available for changing in. There are permanent toilets located at the slipway building and at Balloch Tourist Information. We will also have 4 'portaloos' at the Event Centre.

British Triathlon Members

If you have entered as a British Triathlon Federation Member then you must present your membership card at Registration. If you do not present evidence of your membership you will be required to purchase a one day race license for £6 before being allowed to race.

Event Rules

We hope that everyone will have a great day, to ensure this happens please familiarise yourself with the BTF rules for events.

Course Details

Bike Route x2 Loops

GPS track of the Wee Beastie Bike Lap can be seen here. 1 Loop is nearly 4.5km so you will ride it 2 times to make 9km.
Unlike previous years there will be no need to dismount until you have finished your 2 laps, unless you get stuck in the mud!

Run Route x1 Loop

GPS track of the Wee Beastie Run Lap can be seen here, 1 Loop is just over 3km.
Heading up to registration out of transition, you will turn down along the shore to the end of the park. Here you will be directed around the edge of the Moss o Balloch and back into the park to start climbing the Main Drive. You will turn back when you reach the point that the Bike course joins the Main Drive and head back past the walled garden turn off.
You will then turn back along the Shore Road, the way you headed out, finally heading for the Finish Arch instead of Transition.
